IKEA Hacking Project Complete

So it's finally finished! My first attempt at Ikea hacking and I found all the necessary parts to complete this project. It has been a year from now since I last worked on it because I was busy for most of the time. Here are the final results: The total (including the glass shelf, doors, and paints) came out to be under 100$, which is a lot cheaper than buying a complete new shelf and buying the lights for 300$. I saved 200$ which I can use that money to buy more toys!!! For those that are interested in my process take a look at the previous IKEA hack section or just leave me any comments.

The project is about 90% done. I still need to buy some acrylic boards from Industrial Plastic & Paints, move all my vinyl friends over, and clean the door glass as you can see from this photograph. So as far as where I am at now, you can see from the image above.

Ikea Hack Project - Day 4

So I pushed the project for about 10 days because of working on a few projects at school. But I finally found some time to finish with the painting and I am about 80% done with the whole thing. All I really need is the acrylic board for the inside and attaching these sexy LED lights. Though I think I might just assemble the whole thing tonight and see how it goes from here.

Ikea Hack Project - Day 3

SKIL 2.0A Palm Sander

(best tool I have ever bought so far)

Got fed up with sanding the entire shelf by hand so I went out to buy a sander. I bought the SKIL 2.0A - 1/4 Sheet Palm Sander from Rona. I ended up re-sanding everything and it took around 15 minutes to finish every part. So much for that 2 hours of hand sanding done earlier?

Started painting and repainting some of the parts and I must say it's looking pretty good. I am hoping to finish the painting by the coming weekend and hopefully I can go out to buy the acrylic board sometime next week.

First off Happy Thanksgiving!! I hope everyone enjoyed a nice Turkey dinner with their family & friends. Even though today was a holiday I am sure there are those working hard on their projects as we speak. Today I finally finished sanding the drawer and finished painting the doors. The first attempt failed and I had to sand off the paint and re-paint it again layer by layer. So far the color of the paint is pretty nice so I think I will go to Rona tomorrow again to buy can or two.

For safety reasons I bought my self some Degil Masks to prevent me from inhaling all the dust from the sanding and the chemical fumes from the spray paint. I know that the mask is not strong enough for the chemical fumes, but as some know I am poor and if I need to breath I run outside to get some fresh air. Still works fine.

Ikea Hack Project - Day 1

Original Shelf + Additional door

Finally had the time to start on my first attempt as this Ikea Hack project. I have been wanting to do this for a while but never had the time or motivation to. Now that I have more time on my hands, today was the first day to start on this project. I will be changing my old shelf into a Kid Robot Dunny collection shelf with glass doors, adding in LED lights, and of course painting it black.

Replacing original doors to glass doors

120 grit sand paper + 180 grit sand paper finish

Day 1 - before painting the shelf and the doors, I used painters tape to cover the glass windows. This is to prevent the paint on sticking to the glass because it's gonna be a hassle trying to remove them with alcohol and all. Using 120 grit sand paper to remove the initial protective layer and finishing it with 180 grit sand paper in smoothing the surface.
